Featured Stone: Chlorastrolite

Chlorastrolite, Michigan's State Gemstone, was first discovered in 1847 by C.T. Jackson and J.D. Whitney on Isle Royale, Lake Superior, Michigan. Also called Greenstone or Green Starstone, Chlorastrolite is a rare variety of Pumpellyite.

Chlorastrolite can be found along the shores of Lake Superior, particularly along the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale, but collection is prohibited on Isle Royale, a National Park.

They can be tricky to cab and even polish, as they are often hollow or calcite filled, but if successful, the end result is beautiful turtleback patterned gem.

For information on more interesting rocks and minerals check out Collecting Rocks, Gems, and Minerals by Patti Polk.

Customer Find: Gold!!

This image was sent by one of our customers who will remain nameless but who agreed to let us share his findings. The bigger pieces are from the last 10 years or so, but the large group of smaller pieces are from this year alone, all found in spot about 10 feet in diameter!

Good News and Bad News...

We've got a lot going on, some good news, some bad news. First off, I'd like to say thanks for all the great feedback we've been getting lately! We work hard to stay in-stock and get orders out the door as fast as possible and all of your great emails and phone calls make it well worth the effort. We have a truly great bunch of customers!

The good news - Black Cat Mining.com is getting an overhaul. Over the coming months we will be redesigning, and rebuilding our site to add many of the features our customers have asked for. I don't want to let the proverbial cat out of the bag, but I think you're going to love the new site.

And the bad news - pending closeout of our remaining Keene inventory, we will no longer be a Keene dealer. This is no knock on Keene. We've sold a ton of their stuff during our brief dealership, and they've been happy to have us on board. Unfortunately, when we moved south, we inadvertently moved into another dealer's territory, and that dealer decided to push the issue.

C'est la vie - we're not going to be down about it, but I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers going forward. We are very pleased to continue to carry Proline, Jobe, Royal, Garrett and many other great brands!

Thank you so much for all your support,
Eathan Mertz
